How To Enjoy ‘Suicide Squad’ Without Having To See The Terrible Movie

Jack Kocsis | Director of Commerce

“Suicide Squad” is not a good movie. It came out on Friday, and — unless you live under a rock — I guarantee you I am not the first person to tell you not to see it.

But it sounded so good in theory! Villains recruited to do the government’s dirty work? That’s so intriguing! A soundtrack that includes Creedence Clearwater Revival, Panic! at the Disco and Eminem? Count me in!

Unfortunately, everything else about the project ruined these few salvageable parts. But it’s okay. Your experience with the good aspects of “Suicide Squad” can be redeemed. Let’s start with the storyline. There’s an old saying that the book is always better than the movie. Well, if 2009’s “Watchmen” taught us anything, it’s that the mantra can be extended to comic books. (Or at least to comic book movies in which Zack Snyder is involved).

Luckily, the Suicide Squad exists in comic book form — specifically, in a five-volume book series. In these volumes, you can enjoy the creative idea behind the team of big bads on work release without sacrificing 130 minutes of your life watching an atrocious movie.

The five books are, in order:

  1. Suicide Squad Vol. 1: Kicked in the Teeth — $9.66
  2. Suicide Squad Vol. 2: Basilisk Rising — $15.10
  3. Suicide Squad Vol. 3: Death is for Suckers — $10.62
  4. Suicide Squad Vol. 4: Discipline and Punish — $12.74
  5. Suicide Squad Vol. 5: Walled In — $10.10

Unlike the movie, these comic books are actually really good.

And if you just wanted to see “Suicide Squad” because you heard good things about the soundtrack, then I have good news for you. You don’t even have to sit through the two-plus hour movie to listen: the entire album is available online.
